Bobble of the Day Marcus Allen “USC”

Bobble of the Day

Player: Marcus Allen

Team: USC Trojans (SGA)

Year: 2016

Manufacturer: Unknown

This is the second football “Bobble of the Day” blog as this one just came out a few weeks ago. Here we have a Marcus Allen USC Trojans “1981 Heisman Trophy” Winner bobble given out to the first 35,000 fans on September 10th versus Utah State. This is a must have SGA in your collection make no question about it. Number one is because colleges rarely give bobbleheads out to fans. Number two is because it’s USC. USC is a highly recognizable school that puts players in the pro’s faster than Reggie Bush can move his parents into a new house his senior year without paying for it. Number three is because Marcus Allen was fucking nasty at USC and went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL. Number four is because not only is the bobble cool, but the box is fresh as hell. They could have stuck Marcus in a shitty plain ole white box but they didn’t. They made it colorful and added photo’s of him and stats on certain sides of the box. In addition, USC has some sick fucking colors and the gold and maroon is splattered all over the box. I cannot find anywhere on the box where it shows who the manufacturer is but whoever made it did a very good job. The face looks just like Marcus, the colors are bright on his uniform and his pose is fucking boss. I love how they added the helmet on the turf of the base as well.

Sniper Rating: Anytime there’s a top college giveaway being a bobblehead no matter what sport, you go and get it. Big time schools don’t need to give away bobbles in order to sell more tickets to get people through the gates. You think USC needed more fans to come to this game? Fuck no. They did it because it’s a marketing tactic and it’s the season opener and it’s a great idea. Overall, great idea, awesome bobble with bright colors, a dope box and even a better player. This is a sure fire 8.5.

Bobble of the Day TEI Pirates Mascot

Bobble of the Day

Mascot: Pirates Mascot

Team: Pittsburgh Pirates

Year: 1996

Manufacturer: Twins Enterprises (TEI)

Twins Enterprises out in Boston, Massachusetts made these bobbles in the early 1990’s. No one knows for sure how many were made, but if I were to guess I would say 10 to 15 thousand of each. Many old school vintage collector’s call these “nodders” as opposed to bobbleheads. I like these a lot and to complete an entire set of them from any given year is damn near impossible. I’m sure you can try and chip away like I have to collect them all but some are so fucking rare. The majority of these have the thick green base with a sticker with black lettering displaying the team name or mascot. I’ve seen many that have the sticker on backwards and crooked and it looks like dog shit. Considering these were made over 20 years ago, the condition is a major factor. These TEI’s are made with such heavy ceramic molding and a very thin layer of paint that even the littlest bump against anything will surely chip the paint off. I have over 60 of them and I cannot find one that doesn’t have a chip of paint either on the body, the base or the neck. If you buy one, you can sure as hell bet that any one of these that don’t come with a neck protector will have paint chips in the neck area.

Sniper Rating: These TEI’s are the follow up models of the late 50’s and 60’s nodders but are designed much more sturdy. The earlier 50’s and 60’s nodders are ridiculously fragile and rare. You’ll almost never find one in absolute mint condition without any obvious restoration. Therefore, these late 80’s and 90’s TEI’s are awesome to collect if you have the room to display them. I particularly like this Pirate Mascot because of the fine detail and paint work put forth by our friends in China. Most of the standard boy faces go from anywhere between $20.00 to $40.00 and most mascots are more expensive. When wanting to start a TEI collection the most important thing is to zero in on condition, as that’s the biggest factor. If your TEI’s are in good shape, the stickers are glued on straight and there’s not to many obvious chips of paint missing, you’re looking at a rating of a 8.0.

Bobble of the Day David Price

Bobble of the Day

Player: David Price

Team: Tampa Bay Rays

Year: 2008 SGA

Manufacturer: Alexander Global Promotions (AGP)

David Price has been bouncing around to several different teams but this TB Rays bobble is his first SGA. All of the Rays bobbles are mini’s, usually 4-5 inches and they come in a small box. I like this one. It’s cool. I like the light blue jersey color and his pitching stance replicates him getting ready to throw a fucking seed to home plate. The base shows him toeing the rubber which you don’t see on a lot of SGA’s when it’s a pitcher. The stripe on his pants are very detailed and his name on the back of the jersey is extremely visible.

Sniper rating: Metro PCS is the sponsor on this bobble which you can see on the front emblem. I assume it’s a phone or data company but it doesn’t take away from what this bobble brings to the table. For David Price’s first ever bobblehead, the Tampa Bay Rays did very well on this one. The fact that it’s not the standard 7″ bobble brings the likability down a hair. He was dominant on the Rays and if you live in Florida you should snag this one(even though he’s no longer with them). Let’s go with a 7.5 on Mr. Price.

Bobble of the Day “Willie Mays Hayes”

Bobble of the Day

Player: Willie Mays Hayes

Team: Cleveland Indians (SGA for Akron Rubberducks)

Year: 2016

Manufacturer: Destroyer Promotional Products

Fans of the movie Major League have to be so fucking stoked that the Akron Rubberducks decided to give out a Willie Mays Hayes SGA Bobblehead. The Rubberducks have given out several bobbles over the years related to the movie (Jake Taylor, Jobu). I personally like this one the best. WMH is the coolest character in my opinion from that movie. He’s energetic and loves to foul balls up to the hitting screen during BP. I also loved the part when he would hammer his black batting gloves onto his wall as a reminder of how many stolen bases he’s swiped.

This bobble is an eye catcher for many different reasons. First, the name is highly noticeable across the front of the base. That’s what makes this bobble pop. You know who it is right off the bat. This bobble of Willie would not be allowed if he wasn’t sliding as his pose. It’s perfect. Fucking Hays just diving into second ready to pop the middle finger to the shortstop covering 2nd base. Hayes’ knees both bobble which is a huge factor why this bobble is so kick ass. The Rubberducks could have just had Willie’s neck bobble, but no. They went the extra mile and had both his knees bobble as an added effect.

Sniper Rating: Anyone who grew up in the early 90’s that likes baseball knows that Willie Mays Hayes is the shit. Great actor, awesome movie, fresh bobble. I wish the box came colored with an actual “movie pose” of Willie sliding instead of the white standard box. Get this bobble before the price gets astronomical price! 9.0 on this one.

Bobble of the Day Madison Bumgarner

Bobble of the Day

Player: Madison Bumgarner

Team: San Francisco Giants

Year: 2012 SGA

Manufacturer: Alexander Global Promotions (AGP)

The Giants handed out this Madbum SGA back in 2012. We all know how good Madbum is. He’s legit. Seems like every single year this dude’s got an E.R.A under 2.00. I think all would agree that Bumgarner is slightly under Kershaw as the best in the bigs. That being said, this bobble is a big disappointment. First off, the entire stance and position of both of his arms makes this a very wide bobble which is not good(I’ll explain later). The pitchers mound base is very cheap looking. It looks nothing like a pitchers mound let alone brown dirt. The sponsor emblem PG&E is way to tall and is very easy to crack off. I’ve owned 4 of these since 2012 and 3 out o 4 came with the sponsor logo cracked. It’s an awful placement and an overall shitty looking logo.

The uniform is the off-white color which looks cool. The facial hair on Madbum looks dope but his face does not resemble him at all. On to the stance, couldn’t the Giants have made a better stance for Madbum’s first bobble? His arms waving makes this very difficult to display in a cabinet. I have a major gripe with this. When I first picked up the box I could barely palm it as it’s way to long.

Sniper Rating: I really dig Madbum as a pitcher but this bobble of him deserves more. The box is way to big, his stance is way to wide to display and his face doesn’t resemble him. SF fans deserve better than this. The logo emblem is garbage and overall a big disappointment. Great player, awesome colors, shitty design and basically a terrible bobble in my opinion. Sorry SF fans. 4.0 rating on this one.

P.S. Hopefully one day the Giants will make one of Madbum getting into a scuffle with Puig.

Bobble of the Day Shooter McGavin

Bobble of the Day

Player: Shooter McGavin

Team: Akron Rubber Ducks

Year: 2016 SGA

Manufacturer: Destroyer Promotional Products

You eat pieces of shit for breakfast? Happy Gilmore is a fucking classic movie. If you haven’t seen it you’re better off slamming your dick in a door. One of the all time best comedies. The Rubber Ducks did it right. Christopher McDonald was even there to sign autographs. This is a must have non sport bobblehead. Shooter’s stance says it all after he drains a put he blows the smoke away from the gun. He’s holding his golf club and his face resembles Shooter perfectly. The detail is bad ass and his hair looks cool as shit.

Sniper rating: This one is an all-time bobble. I’m calling it now. Who wouldn’t want this to add to their collection? The price is very steep on eBay as they are going for anywhere between $75.00 to $100.00. The longer you wait the more pricey it will become. This brings me back to my youth when I used to watch this over and over again. An overall great collector’s item with stories and one liners to tell. This would get a overwhelming 10.0 but with just a plain ordinary white box it’s worth a 9.0. They should have made a colorful box and this would be considered a top 5 Bobblehead ever in existence.
