Mookie Betts year after year just knows how to flat out run on the base paths, as he scored the run that broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning on a routine ground ball to first base. It proved to be the winning run in the Dodgers’ series-clinching 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 6 of the World Series.
Betts shot a double into the left field corner with one out against reliever Nick Anderson, sending Austin Barnes to third base. With an 0-and-1 count against the next hitter, Corey Seager, Anderson bounced a curveball in the dirt that got past catcher Mike Zunino. Barnes scored from third base, tying the score 1-1, and Betts advanced to third base on the wild pitch.
Seager hit a bouncing ground ball to Rays first baseman Ji-Man Choi on Anderson’s next pitch. Betts broke for home plate on contact. He was halfway down the line by the time the ball got to Choi. By the time Zunino caught the relay throw, Betts’ left hand was touching home plate at the end of a head-first slide.
Today, FOCO has unveiled a special moment bobblehead commemorating Mookie’s brilliant base-running skills. Mookie stands in a celebration pose after popping up from a dirty home plate base. The signature Word Series trophy sits on the corner of the base and the front of the base reads LA World Series Champions in raised letters.
